ZCC tackles irregular migration through sport

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) recently hosted a Sports for Peace Tournament at Vheneka in Chipinge ward 27, an event meant to raise awareness about the dangers of irregular migration.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Irregular migration is the movement of people that happens outside the laws, regulations or international agreements governing the entry into or exit from the State of origin, transit or destination. Many individuals move abroad to seek education, reunite with families or take up jobs.

The tournament which was running under the theme “Empowered Youth, Safe Choices: Securing a Future at Home” was made possible under the Accelerated Ecumenical Interventions for the Reduction of Risky Flight Program.

In an update, ZCC said that many young people especially those in marginalized communities perceive that migration is the escape from economic challenges yet it might end up in exploitation when done without a proper consideration.

“For many young people in marginalized communities, migration seems like the only way to escape from economic hardships. But too often, this journey ends in exploitation, danger or tragedy. Through sports, as ZCC we engaged the youth in constructive dialogue about alternative opportunities, skills development and community-driven solutions to secure a better future at home.

“The tournament was successful and it brought together schools, community teams and local stakeholders, reinforcing the message that hope and prosperity is possible within our boarders,” said ZCC.

Meanwhile, one of the youths Thulani Ndlovu who shared his views on migration said that “Verily as youths we need that same education and awareness so that we will not be trapped in danger. I remember some time ago reading the news of some young people who became sexual victims in Kuwait.”As young people we assume that green pastures are only found in other countries not knowing that every good thing in life comes through hardworking. Some of our youths are crossing boarders illegally and some of them end up being used in robbery and sexual activities because of desperation in a foreign land,” he said.

At the tournament, winning teams walked away with money prizes and trophies with hope and knowledge as the greatest victory which was achieved.
