The world conquering sprinter, Tapiwanashe Makarawu , a Salvation Army member, was crowned the Overall Best Sportsperson of the Year at the 2025 National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ), Athletics Excellence Awards held in Bindura.
Makarawu, who is currently competing abroad, was represented by his father, Major Richard Makarawu, a senior officer in the Salvation Army Church.
The young sprinter, also walked away with the Best Senior Male Athlete of the Year title, a reflection of his exceptional season and growing reputation on the international athletics stage.
Speaking at the ceremony, Major Makarawu attributed his son’s success to God’s grace, saying:
“We are just stewards. This is the Lord’s doing. Tapiwanashe’s journey has been guided by prayer, discipline, and the belief that God elevates those who honour him.”
He encouraged fellow parents to nurture the talents of their children, noting that support at home can unlock incredible potential.
“I urge parents to take interest in their children’s gifts; whether academic, artistic, or athletics. With faith, mentorship, and hard work, great things can be achieved,” he said.
Tapiwanashe Makarawu has become one of Zimbabwe’s standout athletes, flying the national flag high in regional and global competitions. His accolades mark not just personal victory, but a win for the country’s athletics community and all who believe in purpose-driven excellence.
