The 2025 International Day of The Girl Child commemorations have brought hope to many young underprivileged girls in Chitungwiza following the donations of over 2000 sanitary wear at a family fun day that was hosted by Teen Rescue Mission (TRM) on 11 October 2025 at Damview Chikwanha, in Chitungwiza.
The commemorations which were running under the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis” were organised to bring young girls together for the purposes of empowerment and education around issues of children’s rights and crisis management.
Speaking as the guest of honor, The Ambassador of India to Zimbabwe Mr. Bramha Kumar vowed their unwavering support to nurturing and empowering the girl chikd with indispensable tools that allow the child to tackle period poverty and discrimination in societies.
“We value the girl child and believe that supporting her is supporting a family, community, and nation.We are proud to support TRM’s efforts and look forward to working together to safeguard the girl child who are the future mothers of our tommorrow.You support the girl child, you support a family and you support a great nation of our tommorrow,”he said
TRM Director Abraham Matuka counted the youths for their innovative ideas and efforts that led to the mobilization of the adequate sanitary wear making the event a success in the history of the organisation
“We are thrilled to celebrate this day with families coming together to our event. This was an idea from the youths in our organisation, and I am proud to say it was the boys who initiated the sanitary wear drive to support their sisters in need.
“Raising 2000 sanitary pads is a remarkable achievement, and I congratulate them on their efforts and achievement,”said Matuka
Meanwhile, speaking during the event,Tinashe Mutasa one of the youths emphasised the importance of valuing and protecting girls saying “The girl child needs healthy and educated therefore as men and boys we must upport them.
Faith Alumenda a former Junior Councillor who is now TRM Ambassador expressed gratitude followng the success of the sanitary pad drive saying “As a young girl, I am happy that my fellow sisters in need will have relief from these donations.Going through the monthly period without sanitary wear is difficult.
“The donations that we have witnessed today mean that girls’ dignity has been restored,”she said
Junior Councillor Munashe Ndoro expressed gratitude to everyone who supported the event.
“I am overwhelmed by the response and support which all of you have shown for this campaign. Let us continue to support the girl child towards creating an environment that will allow them to thrive,”said Ndoro.
Parents who also attended the event commended the gesture while revealing that similar programmes should be done regularly inorder to empower young people.
Mrs Chipaure said “This is something that should be done oftenly.Our children need these teachings and gatherings. We are happy to have brought our two boys and one girl and we are very confident that this will positively impact their lives.
The event was also attended by Chitungwiza ZRP representatives, Council, and churches, who praised TRM for their efforts in promoting the welfare of the girl child.
The theme for International Day of the Girl Child , “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis” highlights the extraordinary leadership and resilience of girls in confronting global issues, particularly in times of crisis.
It also emphasizes the importance of empowering girls to lead change in their communities and beyond, promoting gender equality, and ensuring equal access to education, safety, and leadership opportunities.
