1 John 3:9 presents a profound truth about the transformative power of being born of God: “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”

This verse addresses the change in behaviour and nature that occurs in someone who is truly born of God. It highlights the significant impact of God’s presence within us, shaping our actions and attitudes.

“Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin,” suggests that those who are born of God do not continue to live in habitual sin. This does not mean that believers are completely sinless, but rather that their lives are no longer characterised by ongoing, willful sin. The new birth results in a transformation that breaks the dominion of sin over their lives.

“For his seed remaineth in him,” refers to the divine nature and the Holy Spirit that dwell within believers. The “seed” represents the life and nature of God implanted in the believer’s heart. This divine presence is what empowers and sustains the believer, enabling them to resist sin and pursue righteousness. It signifies an ongoing, internal influence that guides and shapes their actions.

“And he cannot sin, because he is born of God,” emphasises the fundamental change that being born of God brings. The phrase “cannot sin” is understood in the context of living a life dominated by sin. Because God’s nature is within them, believers have a new inclination towards righteousness and away from sin. This is not about absolute perfection but about the new direction and desire that characterise their lives.

As we reflect on this verse, it’s essential to understand that it underscores the profound transformation that occurs when one is born again. This transformation does not make believers immune to temptation or incapable of sinning, but it does mean that their relationship with sin changes. Sin no longer has the controlling power it once had, and the believer’s life is marked by a growing desire to live in accordance with God’s will.

Today, let us be encouraged by the truth that being born of God means we have His life and nature within us. Let us rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us and empower us to live righteously. When we do stumble, we can seek forgiveness and know that God’s seed remains in us, continually working to conform us to His image.

May we strive to live as true children of God, reflecting His nature in our actions and attitudes, and growing in holiness and love. Amen.
