On 2 July 1865, William Booth, Founder and 1st General of The Salvation Army, stepped out to preach his first sermon at the Blind Beggar, marking the birth of the Salvation Army. The sermon was a spark that would light up 134 countries with the spirit of Salvationism embedded in the hearts of the recipients and participants.
In Zimbabwe, to mark the 160th anniversary, soldiers and friends gathered at Chombira, Chiweshe Division on 13 July 2025.
“We have gathered to celebrate a milestone of 160 years of global ministry… but also to reflect on the great spirit that has brought hope and healing to countless lives. Moved by a heart of evangelism and practical ministry, which helped the Salvation Army grow through passionate service in winning souls, growing saints, and serving suffering humanity.
The Army has grown and continues to transform lives through institutions and community development programmes.
“The Global strategic Plan must drive us to stay true to our mission as we honor the past and power the present. We are not only serving, but laying a foundation for the future. I challenge you to grow the Army as you shoulder this task. May The Salvation Army remain faithful to its mission,” said Commissioner Daniel Kasuso, Territorial Commander.
The Salvation Army has, from the beginning, a gospel of the whole person; hence, its mission, the reason for its existence, can be summarized as winning souls, and growing saints, and serving suffering humanity.
In Zimbabwe, since its arrival on 18 November 1891, The Salvation Army has been bringing community and personal transformation. It complements government efforts in the education system, where it has more than 150 schools as of today; hospitals include Howard, Tshelanyemba, and the recent Chingwena clinic, playing a pivotal role in the health delivery system. In the social area, The Salvation Army is visible through its old people‘s homes which include Bumhudzo Hospital Home, Braeside Home, and Ralstein Home, complementing government efforts in alleviating the burden and making life a worthy living for the desperate elderly.
The Salvation Army is always prepared to manage disasters. During Cyclone Idai, The Salvation helped the affected people through the provision of clothing, food, and counseling. In mitigating the impact of droughts, The Salvation Army has been restocking in Matabeleland and using sustainable agricultural methods.
