Ramses Gauthier, the Deputy Mission Director of USAID, recently embarked on a tour of the Lupaka Irrigation Scheme in Zimbabwe, where he witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of water access on agricultural productivity and community livelihoods.

Supported by the USAID-funded Amalima Loko program, the Lupaka irrigation scheme has been empowered with a sand abstraction system, enabling members to access water for irrigation throughout the year.

During the tour, Gauthier observed how garden members utilise water from the abstraction system to irrigate a diverse range of crops, allowing them to produce surplus yields for their households and generate income by selling their produce at the market.

Covering a total area of 3 hectares, the Lupaka irrigation scheme serves as a lifeline for the local community, providing water not only for agricultural activities but also for the nearby clinic and the broader community.

The impact of the system extends beyond agriculture, benefiting 286 households, 22 businesses in the local business center, as well as 768 students and 21 teachers at Lupaka Primary School.

Gauthier’s visit underscored the critical role of water access in promoting food security, economic empowerment, and community development.

By leveraging innovative water management solutions, such as the sand abstraction system, the Lupaka irrigation scheme has become a model of sustainable agriculture, enabling communities to harness the potential of their land and resources.

As Zimbabwe continues to grapple with water scarcity and climate variability, initiatives like the Lupaka irrigation scheme demonstrate the importance of investing in resilient water infrastructure and empowering communities to adapt to changing environmental conditions.
