As the world celebrates International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8th, the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) stands at the forefront of advocating for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Under the theme “Invest in women: Accelerate progress,” the ZCC emphasizes the critical importance of investing in women and girls across all spheres of life to drive sustainable development and accelerate progress through gender equality.

Reflecting on the progress made globally in uplifting the status of women while acknowledging the persistent challenges they face, the ZCC underscores the need for bold action and commitment from governments, organizations, and communities to address barriers such as discrimination, violence, and unequal access to resources.

Recognizing the strides made by the government of Zimbabwe in advancing women’s rights, including the enactment of progressive legislation such as the 2013 Constitution and the new Marriages Act, ZCC commends these efforts while calling for further action to tackle issues like child marriages, violence against women, and underrepresentation in decision-making structures.

In line with its mandate, ZCC has implemented various initiatives aimed at accelerating women’s education, health care, economic empowerment, and leadership development. Through gender-sensitive programming, advocacy, and partnership building, ZCC works tirelessly to promote gender equality and amplify the voices of women and girls in Zimbabwean society.

In a bold call to action, the ZCC urges the government of Zimbabwe to invest in raising awareness of gender-related laws, strive for gender parity in decision-making structures, and provide targeted capacity-building programs for women, particularly in climate change decision-making. Additionally, the ZCC calls upon churches to serve as safe spaces for women and girls and prioritize collaboration with stakeholders to address gender-based challenges effectively.
