On The Run”: How a $1 Million Fraud Case Landed Hezy Motors Founder Back Behind Bars
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

When Hazel Silibaziso Mafu founded Hezy Motors Logistics, she was selling a dream to hundreds of Zimbabweans: affordable imported vehicles, delivered with trust. Today, that dream is at the center of a $1 million fraud case that has put the company founder in remand prison after a Harare magistrate ruled she was too much of a flight risk to be granted bail.

On Monday, Regional Magistrate Jesse Kufa denied Mafu bail, drawing a sharp line between her and her co-accused, who have already been released. The reason, the court said, was simple but damning: she ran.

“She was on the run, unlike her accomplices,” Kufa told the court. “She has proved that she can abscond if granted bail. There are compelling reasons as to why the accused should be denied bail. For these reasons application for bail is dismissed.”

With those words, Mafu’s application collapsed. She will now wait for trial behind bars, while the case continues to send ripples through Zimbabwe’s vehicle importation industry.

Hezy Motors Logistics built its name as a vehicle importation company, a sector that has exploded in Zimbabwe over the last decade as demand for Japanese and South African cars grew. For many buyers, companies like Hezy Motors offered a way to own a car without dealing directly with complex import processes and foreign payments.

But prosecutors allege that behind the branding was a $1 million fraud scheme. Court details of the full allegations are yet to be fully laid out in trial, but the scale alone has made this one of the most watched commercial fraud cases this year.

The fact that Mafu’s co-accused are out on bail makes the magistrate’s decision stand out even more. According to Kufa, it was Mafu’s conduct after the alleged offences that set her apart. Fleeing, the court argued, is not just an action

In Zimbabwean law, bail is not automatic. Courts weigh flight risk, interference with witnesses, and the seriousness of the offence. By citing Mafu’s time “on the run,” the magistrate signaled that the court believes she may not return to face trial if released.

Legal analysts say the ruling also sends a message to the business community: size and status do not guarantee preferential treatment before the law. For ordinary Zimbabweans who may have paid deposits to Hezy Motors, the denial of bail offers a measure of assurance that the case will proceed with the accused present.

This case lands at a time when trust in vehicle importers is already fragile. Stories of lost deposits, delayed cars, and ghost companies circulate weekly on WhatsApp groups and Facebook. A $1 million fraud allegation involving a known brand feeds directly into that anxiety.

For now, Mafu remains in remand prison as she awaits trial. The court has not set a trial date yet. Her lawyers are expected to decide next steps.

Until then, the questions linger: How did a logistics company grow so fast? Who else was involved? And how many customers are still waiting for vehicles or refunds?

On Trending Tuesday, we don’t just report the verdict. We ask what it means for you  the buyer, the business owner, the commuter watching fuel and car prices climb. A $1 million case is not just about one company. It’s about trust, accountability, and what happens when that trust breaks.
