As I visited orphanages in Mashonaland Central Province last week, I was struck by the resilience and determination of the children I met. Their stories and experiences left a lasting impression on me, and I was reminded of the importance of supporting and empowering vulnerable children. The words of Matthew 25:35 came to mind: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”
The visit, part of a career guidance tour organized by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare’s Department of Employment Services, in collaboration with Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, Zimbabwe Republic Police, and The National Parks and Wildlife Management, was an eye-opening experience that challenged my perspective and deepened my appreciation for the resilience of these young souls.
As I walked through the facilities, I was struck by the palpable sense of love and care that permeates every aspect of life in these homes. Despite the challenges they face, the children in these orphanages are not just surviving; they are thriving. Their faces lit up with smiles as they shared their dreams, aspirations, and determination to succeed, despite the odds stacked against them. What struck me most was the hunger for knowledge and success that burns within these young souls.
As we engaged in career guidance sessions, I was impressed by the sharpness of their questions and the confidence with which they spoke about their future plans. Despite growing up without the love and support of biological parents, these children refused to let their circumstances define them. Instead, they drew strength from their resilience and determination to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others. One child said, “Growing up in an orphanage doesn’t mean I’m limited; it means I have a chance to make a difference in my own way.” This sentiment was echoed by many others, who expressed their desire to become leaders and change-makers in their communities.
The visit was a powerful reminder that every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves love, care, and support. It also highlighted the critical role that organizations and individuals play in providing these children with the opportunities they need to thrive.
As we continue to navigate the complexities of our economic challenges, it’s essential that we don’t forget the needs of our most vulnerable citizens – the children in orphanages. They require our love, support, and guidance to overcome the obstacles they face and realize their full potential. Let’s take a moment to think about these children in orphanages. When we eat and drink, let’s spare a thought for them. Let’s visit them, let’s hug them, and let’s show them love. A simple smile, a motherly touch, or a listening ear can make a world of difference in their lives.
I salute the unsung heroes – the social workers and foster mothers who care for these children with patience, love, and dedication. Their work is a shining example of the human spirit’s capacity for kindness, compassion, and generosity.
“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10. Let us not forget the children in orphanages, but instead, let us strive to make a difference in their lives, one act of kindness at a time.
