In his motive to unite people from across different regions of Africa and to break denominational barriers, fast emerging Afro-fusion and Jazz gospel musician artist Collen Ngwali has demonstrated to be bringing a new taste into the gospel music industry through the integration of different genres and the packaging of the word of God in a way that inspire hope, redeem souls and revive faith.
Setting off his musical journey a decade ago in 2002,Ngwali tested the waters by composing his debut song “Batsirai” which had proven his ability to positively impact the souls of people. The song “Batsirai” was also on the other hand a prayer for himself as he had been seeking God’s grace upon the musical journey that he had been embarking on.
In an exclusive interview with ZimG.ospel Masters magazine, Ngwali revealed that the nature of his music aims at bringing people together despite their religious beliefs or affiliations since Jesus Christ came neither for the Jews nor for the Gentiles but he came for every soul.
“Sometimes when people spread the gospel of Jesus Christ it seems as if they target a certain group whilst leaving other groups but the kind of my approach is different. I sing to everyone, my message targets everyone. Through my music I share inspiring stories of hope, the word of redemption and faith which resonates with listeners.
“I am also promoting cultural fusion by incorporating traditional Zimbabwean sounds and styles into my music and this is helping to promote cultural exchange and understanding within the gospel music industry, “he said
Ngwali believes that he is emerging as a unique brand in the gospel landscape because of the nature of his artistic abilities which allow him to blend different styles hence producing something which has never been offered before.
“My blend of Afro-fusion jazz and traditional elements with gospel music creates a unique sound that sets me apart from other gospel musicians. Also my music reveals an authentic Zimbabwean perspective. As a Zimbabwean artist, I am bringing a fresh and authentic perspective to the gospel music scene, sharing my experiences, hopes and faith with a global audience, “he added
He added that drawing inspiration for his music from global gospel artists, local Zimbabwean talent, personal experiences and faith, Zimbabwean culture and traditions and collaborations it allows him to come out with a unique messages and sound that captures and satisfies a broader audience.
“I learn from several gospel musicians both local and international. For example I learn from a renowned Nigerian gospel musician Eben, our local Shingisai Siluma. Also my music is inspired by my personal experiences and faith, an aspect that I believe it’s also helping to stir the hearts of those who are just like me, ” he added
