The Zimbabwe Association of the Visually Handicapped (ZAVH) and Leonard Cheshire Disability Zimbabwe (LCDZ) hosted a ground breaking awareness campaign at Tshovani Primary School in Chiredzi on August 20, 2024. The event aimed to promote inclusive education for children with disabilities, shattering barriers and stereotypes.

Gift Mupambiki, a visually impaired program officer at ZAVH, delivered a powerful message as he urged parents to treat their disabled children equally and prioritize their education.
“We encourage the disabled to get educated and not just be kept at home. Education empowers children to pursue their dreams and become self-sufficient,” he said.
Mupambiki’s own journey exemplified the transformative power of inclusive education. Despite facing numerous challenges, he pursued his degree in Special Needs Education at Reformed Church University.
Susan Machingura, a short-sighted facilitator for LCDZ, shared her inspiring story. “Disability does not mean inability,” she emphasized.
Machingura encouraged the disabled to pursue education and become independent.
“Education empowers one to stand and take care of themselves in life. We should not just venture in projects but also get educated,” she said.
Machingura expressed gratitude to the President and Social Welfare for supporting her education, which she hopes to continue at Great Zimbabwe University in 2025 with a degree in education.
The awareness campaign captivated the audience with inspiring stories, highlighting the importance of inclusive education.
Morgan Tinarwo from the Department of Social Development Social Welfare encouraged the audience to report parents or guardians who fail to send their disabled children to school.

The event concluded with a call to action, urging parents to prioritize education for their disabled children and treat them equally. The awareness campaign marked a significant step towards a more inclusive Zimbabwe, where disabled individuals can reach their full potential and contribute to the country’s growth and development.
