Organised by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and sponsored by Eversharp, the competition aimed to foster institutional strengthening and sound waste management practices in schools.
Additionally, it provided an opportunity for learners to actively engage in environmental matters, in line with the Environmental Management Act (CAP 20:27).
A total of 3,233 learners from 102 schools, along with patrons of environmental clubs from all ten provinces of the country, graced the occasion, showcasing their dedication to environmental conservation.
The competition recognized outstanding schools across the nation. In the Primary School Section, St. Paul’s Primary School in Midlands clinched the top position, followed by Madyangove Primary School in Masvingo and Hurungwe Primary School in Mashonaland East.
In the Secondary School Section, Rufaro High School in Masvingo emerged victorious, with John Tallach High School in Matabeleland North and Ruya Adventist High School in Mashonaland Central securing the second and third positions, respectively.
Winning schools showcased innovative environmental initiatives, with a strong focus on recycling, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable practices.
The Clean Schools Competition, part of EMA’s “Catch them Young Programs,” initiated in 2022, aims to nurture environmental stewardship, innovation, and responsible behaviour among learners, laying the foundation for a greener future.
During the ceremony, the First Lady presented prizes to the champions, including a 3KVA solar system courtesy of Eversharp and colour-coded bins provided by EMA. Additionally, Dr. Mnangagwa generously donated a borehole, nutrition garden, and fish ponds to Rufaro High School, further enhancing its environmental infrastructure.
