THE Government of Zimbabwe has rolled out the waste collection programme code-named “Operation Chenesa Harare” in the face of the cholera outbreak.
Piles of waste have become the insignia for most centres around Harare, , with over 200 tonnes of waste collected on the first day.
Efforts on the part of residents to maintain some appearance of order have become futile with the situation also undermining business in the Central Business District.
With support from private players, the government has since stepped in through Operation Chenesa Harare, with over 200 tonnes of waste having been collected in areas such as Mbare, and Glen Norah.
The City of Harare believes government intervention will rescue the situation and allow the local authority to re-strategise waste management.
The operation was launched on Saturday in response to the rising cholera cases that have since exceeded 15 000.
