In a notable diplomatic event, His Excellency President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa welcomed Archbishop Janusz Stanislaw Urbańczyk, the newly appointed Apostolic Nuncio, at State House.

This occasion marked the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Government of Zimbabwe.

Archbishop Urbańczyk expressed his commitment to bolstering the already strong ties between the Catholic Church and Zimbabwe.

“I will work to enhance the already good relationship between the Catholic Church and the Government of Zimbabwe,” he stated, underscoring the Church’s ongoing collaboration in health and education through its various organisations.

This appointment by Pope Francis follows a gap since July 2023 when Archbishop Paolo Rudelli was reassigned to Colombia. Archbishop Urbańczyk, born on May 19, 1967, in Poland, was ordained a priest in 1992 and began his diplomatic career with the Holy See in 1997.

His diverse assignments have included roles in Bolivia, Slovakia, New Zealand, Kenya, and the United Nations, culminating in his recent position as the permanent representative of the Holy See to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since January 12, 2015.

A distinguished graduate in Canon Law, Archbishop Urbańczyk is fluent in multiple languages, including English, Italian, Slovak, and Spanish. His rich diplomatic background and linguistic prowess make him well-equipped to represent the Holy See in Zimbabwe.

The appointment of Archbishop Urbańczyk as the Apostolic Nuncio to Zimbabwe is a significant move, reflecting his extensive experience and capability.

This new role promises to further the mission of the Catholic Church in Zimbabwe, fostering greater cooperation in vital areas such as health and education, and strengthening the ties between the Vatican and the Zimbabwean government.
