Amidst the ongoing cholera epidemic in the country, key private sector entities and non-governmental organizations have joined forces to bolster the government’s collective efforts against the disease.
The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society, Finnish Red Cross, and the European Union have recently stepped up their involvement, delivering aqua-safe water quality testing kits and gadgets to the City of Harare this Thursday.

Expressing solidarity with the government, Mr. Elias Hwenga, the Secretary-General for the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society, emphasized their commitment to the fight against cholera.
“Today, we handed over 5 aqua-safe water testing kits and 5 gadgets to the Harare City health to improve their efficiency in the fight against cholera,” he stated.
Harare Province Medical Director, Dr. Tafadzwa Bwerinofa, stressed the significance of ensuring access to safe drinking water.
He noted that the donated equipment would enhance the city’s ability to identify contaminated water points, ultimately aiding in the nationwide effort to combat cholera.
Mr. John Manyara, Acting Head of Environmental Health Services at Harare City Health, expressed the local authority’s willingness to collaborate with private entities in the battle against the epidemic.
“We are working hand in glove with the Government and the Ministry of Health and Child Care in fighting cholera. We are also happy that we continue to be supported by private players such as Red Cross,” he affirmed.
Notably, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, and Botswana have formed a regional cluster to address cholera in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
As of January 25, 2024, Zimbabwe reported 20,678 suspected cholera cases, with 2,332 confirmed cases, 19,971 recoveries, 71 confirmed deaths, and 389 suspected deaths.
The collaboration between government and external partners signifies a united front in combating this public health crisis.
