In a world where anger and retaliation are often the default responses to hurt and offense, Proverbs 19:11 offers a radically different approach. “The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.”
This verse reminds us that self-control and forgiveness are essential qualities for those who seek to live a life that honors God.

When we are wronged or hurt, our natural response is often to lash out in anger or seek revenge. But this verse encourages us to take a different path. Instead of giving in to our emotions, we are called to exercise discretion and self-control, deferring our anger and passing over the transgression.
This is not easy, of course. It requires a great deal of spiritual strength and maturity to respond in such a way. But the rewards are well worth the effort. When we choose to forgive and move on, we experience freedom and peace that we would not otherwise know. We also demonstrate to others the power of God’s love and grace in our lives.
Furthermore, this approach honors God and brings glory to His name. When we choose to respond in a way that is consistent with God’s character, we reflect His love and grace to a watching world. This can be a powerful witness and a testament to the transformative power of the Gospel.
Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on a situation in which you were wronged or hurt. How did you respond? Did you give in to anger or seek revenge, or did you choose to forgive and move on? Ask God to help you respond in a way that honors Him in the future.
