It is not a biblical command to celebrate Mothers’s Day but Christians take time to honour what the Bible says about Mothers.
Respecting mothers carries a long life principle. Exodus 20:12 says, “Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land.” This encourages us to honour our mother practically to honour, respect and care for them with love, not only for day but as a way of life.
Celebrating Mothers’ Day celebrates some of God’s character of love, nurture, patience and sacrifice.. Isaiah 66:13 pictures God’s love, “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.”
The bible is not silent of mothers who were honoured, the scriptures remembers and praises mothers. Here are some examples:
Eve was honoured as: mother of all living” (Genesis 3:20). Sarah is called “mother of nations” (Genesis 17:16). Hannah, a prayer warrior. Prayed, wept, and dedicated Samuel to God (I Samuel 1) Mary the mother of Jesus was called “blessed among women” (Luke 1:48). Lois & Eunice area honoured as women of faith whose faith is traceable in Timothy (2 Timothy 1:5).
The Bible teaches us to show gratitude and being thankful. A day set aside gives us an opportunity to honour and thank our mothers for their love and sacrifice. Colossians 3:15 says, “Be thankful” Thus, Mothers’ Day gives us a chance o fulfill what the bible commends us to do.
Mothers ‘Day gives us an opportunity to show loves as the Bible says on John 13; 35 when it says, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. Honoring our mother is an expression of love as the Bible commends.
We can safely conclude that Mothers’ Day celebration encourages what the Bible already teaches to respect and honour our mothers. Showing them love in anyway is biblical and does not contradict the biblical teaching. What need be taken as caution is to keep God as the object of worship and not our mothers.
