YOUNG people have been encouraged to follow the footsteps of both late and living heroes who were determined to fight for the freedom of the country.
The commemorations, which were characterised with sporting activities, anti-drug abuse education, child marriages and anti-racism in sport have drawn many young people from the community of Chitungwiza.
A youth-led movement, Teen Rescue Mission (TRM), has spear-headed educational and life transforming campaigns in Chitungwiza as a way of celebrating the Heroes Day which came just after the International Youth Day which was celebrated on August 12.

Speaking during the event, one of the sponsors who is also the founder of Sport, Equality and Diversity (SED) Emmanuel Matuka who donated a soccer kit for TRM said young people should be patriotic towards their country and should fight against social ills that haunt their lives and future.
“As a young person working in United Kingdom, it provides me with some opportunities so I was inspired by what TRM is doing and decided to partner them and also assist with the soccer kit.I just want to encourage youths to have positive minds, work hard and be focused,” he said.
In response to the donation, TRM founding director, Abraham Matuka, welcomed the development saying it was going to reinforce their ability in moulding a more focused generation since sport was believed to attract more young people.
“We are so happy for what SED has just done for us. The donations will will go a long way in helping us as an organisation to continue with our mission and as TRM we continue to say no to drugs,no to early child marriages and teen pregnancy,” Matuka said.
Meanwhile, the church also participated in the event with pastor Saurosi of Assemblies of God in Zimbabwe vowed that the church was committed to flush out of communities all social ills that were hampering the future of today’s generation.
