Government has reaffirmed its commitment to win the war against drug and substance abuse, with a high-level Cabinet delegation touring service delivery centres in Mashonaland East on Friday 31 July 2026 to assess progress on the ground.
The familiarisation visit by the National Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse which is led by Hon. O. C. Z. Muchinguri-Kashiri included Hon. Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Dr Zhemu Soda. The delegation was represented by the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Hon. Kazembe Kazembe.
Other ministers on the tour were the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Hon. Ziyambi Ziyambi, represented by Deputy Minister Hon. Nobert Mazungunye, Minister of State and Devolution for Mashonaland East Hon. Itai Ndudzo.
The team visited the Marondera Rehabilitation Centre, where they interacted with frontline health workers, law enforcement, and beneficiaries receiving treatment and psychosocial support.
The visit formed part of Government’s multisectoral strategy to reduce demand and supply of drugs while strengthening prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration services.
Speaking during the tour, officials said the exercise was aimed at promoting national cooperation across ministries, security services, civil society, academia, and communities in line with Vision 2030.
“We are here to see for ourselves how services are being delivered, identify gaps, and ensure resources are channeled where they are most needed,”one senior official noted.
The National Committee also used the visit to monitor implementation of the seven pillars of the Multisectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan: demand reduction, supply reduction, treatment and rehabilitation, psychosocial support and reintegration, media and communication, legal and policy reforms, and resource mobilisation.
Stakeholders highlighted challenges around funding, capacity at treatment centres, and community awareness. Government pledged to strengthen coordination and support to ensure no one is left behind.
The tour brought together Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, the security sector, health practitioners, and civil society, all united under the message,”No to Drugs”
As Zimbabwe pushes toward an upper-middle income society by 2030, officials said a drug-free generation is central to national development.
