The ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of Zimbabwe’s youth were on full display at this year’s Junior Chamber International (JCI) national competitions in Harare.

Ten young innovators captivated audiences with their innovative ideas spanning various sectors, including energy, tourism, waste management, and economics, showcasing their brilliant business acumen and commitment to driving economic development in the country.

One standout innovation, the Chigubhu Lantern, addresses the lighting challenges faced by rural students, providing a sustainable and affordable solution using discarded bottles.

Tanaka Chigubhu, the brains behind the innovation, shared the inspiration behind the project and its potential impact on improving access to education in underserved communities.

Another innovative solution presented at the competition was a tourism application developed by Jeffrey Murungweni, aimed at streamlining accommodation bookings and making travel planning more accessible for locals.

His initiative highlights the power of technology in addressing gaps in the tourism industry and promoting domestic tourism.

The event also served as a platform for young innovators like Khesani to gain recognition and support for their endeavours.

Khesani emphasised the importance of home-grown solutions in addressing local challenges and expressed gratitude for the mentorship and guidance received from experienced professionals.

Adjudicators, including Mr. Pedzi Chingwanda and JCI President for Zimbabwe, Ms. Nomalanga Chipare, lauded the competition for nurturing young leaders and preparing them for the realities of the business world.

They emphasised the importance of agility and resilience in today’s dynamic environment and highlighted the role of youth-led innovation in driving positive change across communities.

Looking ahead, the competition winners will have the opportunity to represent Zimbabwe at the continental stage in Kigali, Rwanda, with the ultimate goal of competing in the global competitions in Kuwait.

This international exposure will further empower young leaders to address global challenges and showcase their commitment to social responsibility and innovation.

JCI, with its global network of more than 100 offices, continues to empower young people worldwide, providing them with the skills and resources needed to make a difference in their communities and beyond.
