Church Joins Forces in the Battle Against Drug Abuse
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a united effort to combat drug and substance abuse in Mashonaland East province, the religious sector has stepped forward to lend its support to the cause.

Members of the Roman Catholic Church in Marondera took to the streets in a march against drug abuse, spanning from Cherutombo suburb to Paradise Park suburb, engaging with the public as part of an extensive awareness campaign.

Father Taruvinga, representing the Roman Catholic Church, highlighted the church’s commitment to complementing government efforts in creating a drug-free society.

He emphasised that raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse is an integral part of their mission and responsibility.

Acknowledging the importance of collaborative efforts, Mashonaland East ZRP spokesperson, Inspector Chazovachii, expressed appreciation for initiatives like the march.

He emphasised that law enforcement agencies cannot tackle the issue of drug abuse alone and welcomed the involvement of community organisations and institutions.

During the march, victims of drug and substance abuse bravely shared their personal experiences, serving as powerful reminders of the devastating impact of addiction.

From individuals currently serving prison sentences for drug-related offences to those who have endured personal hardships due to substance abuse, their stories underscored the urgency of addressing this pressing issue.

One individual, currently incarcerated for a drug-related offence, issued a warning to others, urging them to avoid the path of drug abuse.

Another individual expressed deep regret over the time lost and the suffering endured as a result of addiction, emphasising the importance of prevention and intervention efforts.

The government has also taken a firm stance against drug and substance abuse, establishing a Cabinet Committee dedicated to addressing this societal challenge.
