Convicted inmates from Chinhoyi Prison on Sunday shared personal accounts of drug and substance abuse at an Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) in Zimbabwe church service, warning youths about the consequences of addiction and crime.
The inmates told congregants how drug abuse led them into criminal activities, damaged family relationships and ultimately resulted in their imprisonment. Two female inmates also participated, highlighting that drug addiction affects both men and women.
The outreach programme, held on May 31, 2026, was organised by Chinhoyi Remand Prison Chaplain Correctional Officer Grade One Phebion Pfende in collaboration with Pastor Shingai Magama of the AFM in Zimbabwe Chinhoyi assembly. It formed part of the prison’s community engagement and rehabilitation initiatives.
Addressing the congregation, the inmates described their lives before addiction, the factors that led them to substance abuse and crime, and the impact of their actions on their families. They said imprisonment had given them time to reflect on the harm caused by their addiction and criminal conduct.
Many congregants, including parents and youths, were visibly moved by the testimonies.
Pastor Shingai Magama commended the correctional service for bringing the programme to the church, saying the inmates’ accounts had shown the destructive effects of drug abuse on individuals and families. He said rehabilitation required spiritual support and community involvement rather than condemnation.
The service ended with church elders and congregants praying with the inmates.
