The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints opened its new modern temple in Zimbabwe and the officials announced that it opens its doors to the public, offering them opportunity to walk through one of the Church’s most sacred spaces before its dedication.

The Harare Zimbabwe Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opens its doors to the public, offering a rare opportunity to walk through one of the Church’s most sacred spaces before its dedication.

The opening marks a historic moment not only for Church members in Zimbabwe, but also for the surrounding region. For many, the open house represents the fulfillment of years of faith, sacrifice, and anticipation.

The temple will be dedicated on March 1, 2026, by Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, with the dedicatory session broadcast to congregations throughout the Harare Zimbabwe temple district. Zimbabwe Temple is the first temple in the country, serving more than 46,000 Latter-day Saints in Zimbabwe as well as members in surrounding areas. Since 1985, Church members in the region have traveled long distances—often to Johannesburg, South Africa to participate in temple ordinances, making this local temple a long-awaited blessing.

When the temple was announced in April 2016 by President Thomas S. Monson, there were 150 temples operating worldwide. Nearly a decade later, that number has grown to 383 temples dedicated, under construction, or announced, reflecting the Church’s expanding global emphasis on temple worship.

Located at 65 Enterprise Road in Harare, the temple sits on a 6.7-acre property and rises 31.5 meters high. The 1,602.3-square-meter structure was designed by Paton Taylor Architects and constructed by Rio Douro Construction using cast-in-place concrete, concrete block infill walls, and Corobrik Golden Wheat Travertine face brick accented with precast concrete trim.

Meanwhile, on January 22, H. E. Emmerson Mnangagwa, president of Zimbabwe, along with other interfaith, government and civic leaders, toured the new Harare Zimbabwe Temple.

Invitations for a special open house tour were given to leaders who expressed interest in seeing the first temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints built in Zimbabwe.

Two General Authority Seventies — Elder Erich W. Kopischke, an assistant executive director in the Temple Department, and Elder Vaiangina Sikahema, second counselor in the Africa South Area presidency — gave a tour to the president of the Republic of Zimbabwe and his vice president, the Honorable K.C.D. Mohadi.
