The event, held in Buhera, Manicaland, was themed “Harnessing innovation for climate action and a resilient future,” aligning with the Sustainable Development Goal’s urgent call to combat climate change and its impacts.
The Ministry of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife spearheaded the initiative, highlighting the importance of four environment days traditionally celebrated in March.
Led by EMA and Zimparks, Africa Environment Day and World Wildlife Day are observed on March 3rd, followed by International Day of Forestry on March 21st, led by the Forest Commission, and Meteorological Day on March 23rd, led by the Meteorology Department.
In a bid to promote environmental conservation, the Ministry of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife announced the establishment of a geographical environment fund for land restoration.
This fund, benefiting three provinces – Masvingo, Manicaland, and the Midlands – and 44 wards, aims to equip resource monitors with bicycles and phones. Additionally, six schools, two per province, will receive desktops for data collection and soil erosion monitoring.
To enhance operational efficiency, Forestry District Officers across the provinces will be provided with motorcycles.
During the commemorations, Dr. Mnangagwa planted a Khaya Anthotheca/Muwawa/Red Mahogany tree at St. Abans Chiweshe Primary School in Buhera, symbolising the importance of environmental sustainability.
Furthermore, she launched the Pangolin Strategy, an action plan designed to preserve pangolins, underscoring Zimbabwe’s commitment to biodiversity conservation.
