The Pupu Monument, formerly known as the Shangani Monument, has been reconfigured to accurately represent the historical narrative of the Battle of Pupu.
This battle, which took place on December 4, 1893, saw the Imbizo Regiment, led by General Mtshana Khumalo, triumph over settler forces commanded by Major Allan Wilson.
Unlike previous depictions that glorified the colonial forces, the monument now honours the bravery of the Ndebele warriors who resisted colonial oppression.
Exhibits at the monument showcase pivotal moments of Ndebele resistance, including battles at Bonko and Gadade, as well as the burning of King Lobengula’s capital. President Mnangagwa emphasised the importance of preserving Zimbabwe’s history and identity, acknowledging the critical role played by Matabeleland North Province in the country’s liberation struggle.
