In an interview with Zimgospelmasters magazine, Divine Solutions International Ministries Visionary Prophet Promise Zvinongozha has attributed the rise in drug and substance abuse cases and moral decay among the youths to a low uptake of the youths in today’s church, a situation which he said has been perpetrated by the ignorance of the body of Christ to organise more of young people’s hubs.
He further called for church leaders especially youth Pastors to take a review of their programmes and start to organise more of youth programs such as youth outings, get together sessions and sport games and above all to assign them for some leadership positions, a move which he believed will be able to allow youths input in programming and coordination.
“Youths need plenty of social time that is why you sometimes see them sitting on bridges or shopping centres having some dialogues, unfortunately these gatherings have turned out to be untruthful since some of them have emerged to be drug hubs. So we are saying as church leaders let us have more youth gatherings and social activities and we utilise those platforms to teach them the word of God and guide them in the right direction.
“These social gatherings allow them to freely express themselves, help us identify what exactly do they need, hence we will be able as church leaders to plan for the future so that we do not neglect them in our initiatives. Also we should include them in leadership positions and in some church affairs if possible, this will bring to them a sense of belonging and they feel prioritised especially in decision making processes and with this way we will never go wrong,” he said
Prophet Munashe added that “Not only that we should be using these gatherings for preaching but we can also utilise them for economic empowerment education whereby we can teach our young people some entrepreneurship skills, creating networks and sharing of opportunities. This will be a good recipe for their personal developmental, improved standards of living and by that we will eradicate drug and substance abuse in our societies which has been said to be perpetrated by idleness and unemployment of our young people,” he added
Some of the youths who shared their expressions agreed that youth conferences were not dominating on church calendars as compared to women and other conferences.
Tinotenda Mapani who go to Johanne Masowe eChishanhu said “Being a white garment denomination should not deprive us of youthful and social events,we need them so that we can enjoy serving God but in our church it is rare to have such gatherings as youths,” he said
Mellisa Zvobhwo who is a member of the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe applauded her leaders saying that “In our church AFM we are covered on that issue of youth conferences and activities since sometimes we organise braai meetings and youth get together sessions. We annually go to Rufaro for a National Youth Conference where we are taught several aspects of life so I just want to encourage other youths across the country to embrace youth services in their churches, they are helpful,” she said
