GoZ Denounces Foreign Attempts to Lure Students into LGBTQ+ Activities Through Scholarships
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a recent press statement, the Government of Zimbabwe (GoZ) has vehemently rejected and condemned what it terms as “unlawful, unchristian, anti-Zimbabwe, and un-African” efforts by foreign entities to entice Zimbabwean students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, into engaging in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBTQ+) activities in exchange for educational scholarships.

The government has underscored its stance against such practices, citing legislative measures in place to combat what it views as deviations from national values and ethos, particularly as a Christian nation.

According to Zimbabwean law, any offers of scholarships or financial assistance contingent upon participation in LGBTQ+ activities are deemed illegal and criminal offences.

“These insidious scholarship offers pose a direct challenge to the authority of our government,” the statement read.

“We will not hesitate to enforce national laws and safeguard our cherished national values.”

Moreover, Zimbabwean authorities have emphasised that educational institutions within the country will not entertain applicants associated with what they label as “alien, anti-life, un-African, and unchristian values.”

The government views these values as being propagated by societies deemed decadent, with which Zimbabwe shares no moral or cultural affinity.

“We are a sovereign, African state with distinct laws and values that set us apart,” the statement continued.

“Zimbabwean youth seeking tertiary education opportunities, both domestically and abroad, are urged to approach government departments responsible for granting scholarships to deserving candidates. They should not succumb to the allure of such abominable offers.”

This declaration by the Government of Zimbabwe reflects its commitment to upholding national laws and preserving what it perceives as the country’s unique cultural and moral identity.

It also underscores the government’s determination to protect its youth from what it deems as harmful foreign influences.

The statement concludes with a warning to young Zimbabweans, urging them not to compromise their principles or “sell their souls” for scholarships that come with conditions contradictory to the nation’s values.

The Government’s firm stance on this matter is likely to provoke discussions both domestically and internationally regarding human rights, cultural relativism, and the role of foreign aid in influencing social norms and values in developing nations.
