Reverend Dr. David Phiri, the founding president of the International Preachers Council of Churches (IPCC) and principal of Brilliant Saints Theological Seminary, delivered a message honouring those who fought for Zimbabwe’s freedom yesterday as the country celebrated Heroes Day.

Reverend Phiri acknowledged the rituals that typically take place during this time but emphasised the importance for Christians to also utilise the holiday to celebrate the Heroes in Faith who played a crucial role in shaping the nation’s spiritual journey.

“In times of trial and challenge,” Reverend Phiri stated, “we must remember that heroes are not just figures of legend. They are ordinary individuals who make extraordinary sacrifices for the well-being of others. Through selfless prayers, each one of us has the power to be a hero in someone’s life.”

He highlighted the significance of prayer, describing it as a beacon of hope and light during people’s darkest hours. Quoting from 1 Samuel 12:23, Reverend Phiri urged the audience to unite in prayer and faith, emphasising the importance of interceding for one another with love and perseverance.

“Let us continue to lift our voices in prayer, knowing that our collective prayers have the power to bring about miracles and blessings,” he said. “Together, let us stand strong in our faith, supporting one another through our words and actions.”

Reverend Phiri concluded his speech by encouraging everyone to stay strong and keep the faith. He reminded them that each prayer offered has the potential to make a significant difference in someone’s life. By engaging in the simple act of prayer, individuals have the ability to become heroes in someone’s story.

His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa, accompanied by his two deputies, led the procession at the National Heroes Acre Shrine in Harare, where thousands of people gathered to celebrate. This celebration is usually followed by Defence Forces Day.
