In a historic and bold move, the Salvation Army Church’s Bindura Division marched shoulder to shoulder with the Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Service (ZPCS) and the National Army on November 1st, 2024. The divisional band led the procession, joined by children, uniformed forces, community members, and officials from the Parliament of Zimbabwe. This collective action sent a powerful message that the church condemns all forms of abuse against children and stands in unity with the community to prevent it.
As the Bible teaches us, children are a heritage from the Lord and a reward (Psalm 127:3). We are called to vindicate the weak and fatherless and do justice to the afflicted and destitute (Psalm 82:3). Jesus himself taught us to care for children, saying, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Mark 10:14).
The march was a resounding success, with attendees pledging their support for the cause and committing to take action in their respective communities. As Commissioner Gezi, the Officer Commanding ZPCS Mashonaland Central Province, so eloquently stated, “We owe it to our children to create a world where they can thrive, free from abuse and violence.”
Speaking at the same event during the launch of the campaign against child abuse, rape, and sexual reproductive health and rights, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Tsitsi Gezi emphasized that the campaign aims to fight the growing and disturbing trends of child abuse and marriages. She added, “This campaign is a direct response to the growing concerns regarding the safety of young girls in our communities. Our goal is to raise awareness and shed light on the alarming levels emerging in our country. We aim not only to discuss issues but to advocate for sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR), which are essential for our young women.”
Mrs. Mhembere, a community leader who participated in the procession, emphasized the significance of the church’s role in spreading the message against child abuse. “The church has a huge following, and if Christian leaders preach against child abuse, the message will spread to all corners.” Mr. Larry Magunga, the Band Master, highlighted the importance of education and awareness. “At our church, we have Sunday school lessons, and this is an ideal platform for children to be taught about abuse.” Mr. Jack, the Brigade Sergeant for the Salvation Army band, emphasized the importance of collaboration and action. “We must work together to create a safer tomorrow for our children. The church, government agencies, and organizations must unite to eradicate all forms of abuse.”
The march was a powerful statement that the church and community will not tolerate child abuse and will work together to prevent it. As we move forward, it is essential that we continue to raise our voices against child abuse and work towards creating a world where every child can thrive.
We owe it to our children, and to God, to create a world where they can grow and flourish without fear of abuse. Let us continue to stand together against child abuse and violence, and work towards creating a society where every child can grow and flourish. We owe it to our children, and to God, to create a world where they can thrive.
If you or someone you know has been affected by child abuse, there are resources available to help. Please reach out to your local authorities or organizations that specialize in child abuse prevention and support. Together, we can make a difference and create a safer world for all children.
Let’s work together to prevent child abuse and create a world where every child can thrive. We can make a difference, one step at a time.
