This verse encapsulates the foundational truth of justification by faith, emphasizing that righteousness is not attained through human effort or merit but through faith in God’s saving work.

Justification is the act of God declaring a sinner righteous on the basis of faith in Jesus Christ. It is not achieved through adherence to the law or through good works but is a gift of God’s grace received by faith alone. When we place our trust in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, His righteousness is imputed to us, and we are declared righteous in God’s sight.
The phrase “his faith is counted for righteousness” underscores the importance of faith as the instrumental means by which we receive God’s gift of righteousness. It is not the quality or quantity of our faith that matters but the object of our faith—Jesus Christ—who justifies the ungodly and makes us righteous before God.
Reflecting on this verse prompts us to examine the foundation of our righteousness. Are we relying on our own efforts to earn favor with God, or are we trusting in the finished work of Christ on the cross? Are we resting in the assurance of God’s grace, knowing that our salvation is secured by faith in Him alone?
