Proverbs 19:17 offers a profound insight into the heart of God regarding generosity and compassion: “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”

This verse highlights the importance of caring for the less fortunate and the divine reward for such acts of kindness.

“He that hath pity upon the poor,” speaks to the virtue of compassion. Having pity means showing mercy and empathy towards those who are in need. It involves recognizing the struggles of the poor and being moved to take action to alleviate their suffering. This compassionate attitude reflects the heart of God, who is deeply concerned with the well-being of the marginalised and disadvantaged.

“Lendeth unto the LORD,” provides a remarkable perspective on acts of charity. When we give to the poor, it is as if we are lending to the Lord Himself. This suggests that God identifies with the poor and takes our acts of kindness towards them personally. It also implies a sacred transaction where our generosity is not merely a social duty but a spiritual offering to God.

“And that which he hath given will he pay him again,” assures us of God’s faithfulness in rewarding those who are generous. The promise of repayment by God emphasises that no act of kindness goes unnoticed or unrewarded. While the repayment may not always be in material terms, it often comes in the form of spiritual blessings, personal fulfilment, and a deeper sense of connection with God.

Reflecting on this verse, we are reminded that our treatment of the poor is a direct reflection of our relationship with God. It challenges us to view our resources not just as our own but as tools for serving others and honouring God. Our generosity becomes a testament to our faith and trust in God’s provision and justice.

In practical terms, having pity upon the poor means actively seeking out ways to support and uplift those in need. This can be through financial assistance, volunteering, offering a listening ear, or advocating for social justice. It involves a willingness to share our blessings and to be a source of hope and support for the less fortunate.

The New Testament reinforces this principle in Matthew 25:40, where Jesus says, “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” This underscores the idea that our service to others is a direct service to Christ Himself.

Today, let us embrace the call to compassion and generosity. Let us open our hearts and hands to those in need, knowing that our kindness is a loan to the Lord, who is faithful to repay. As we give, may we experience the joy and fulfilment that come from being instruments of God’s love and mercy.

May we be inspired to act with compassion, seeing each opportunity to help as a chance to honour God. Let us trust in His promise that our generosity will be repaid, and may our lives reflect the heart of God in our care for the poor. Amen.
