Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 Welcome to December, a joyous time of year! As we celebrate this festive season, let us remember that there is a time and place for everything under the sun.
As Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 tells us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak…”

Key Idea 1:
God has ordained times of joy and celebration. The Bible is full of examples of God’s people celebrating special occasions. For instance, the Israelites celebrated the Passover every year to commemorate their deliverance from Egypt (Exodus 12:14).
Similarly, we can find numerous examples of festivals and feasts throughout the Old Testament (Leviticus 23:4-44). Ultimately, God has ordained times of joy and celebration so that we can remember the wonderful things He has done for us.
Key Idea 2:
We can celebrate with humility. When celebrating special occasions, it’s important for us to recognize that all good gifts come from God (James 1:17). We should strive to remember this as we enter into this festive season.
As Jesus said in Luke 17:10, “When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’” This December, let us celebrate with humility and thankfulness for all the blessings God has bestowed upon us.
Key Idea 3:
We can use this season to draw closer to God. The Christmas season provides us with an opportunity to draw closer to God as we celebrate His great gift of salvation.
In the words of the hymn writer Fanny Crosby, “Oh, that blessed hope, the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). Let us use this season to draw closer to Him in prayer and meditation on His Word.
As we give thanks for all He has done for us, let us look ahead with hope and anticipation for what He has yet in store. Conclusion: This December, let us remember that God has ordained times of joy and celebration.
Let us strive to celebrate with humility, remembering all the good gifts He has given us. And let us use this season to draw closer to Him as we look ahead with hope and expectation for all He has yet in store.
