Apostle Fortunate Bhoundi of Visionary of Mount Carmel Victory and Hope Ministry (MCVH), has urged church leaders to pay more attention to the needs of young people in the church if they want youths to stay and to achieve better youth inclusion and participation in the things of God.
“Making the church environment inclusive of the youth takes many steps especially in this era. Youths need to see how faith is relevant to their daily lives, struggles, and aspirations. They crave a sense of community where they feel accepted, valued, and understood. Young people want to be heard and have their opinions and ideas taken seriously and also they desire to contribute meaningfully and make a difference in the world.
“Listening to the youths is one of the most important practices. As leaders we need to actively listen to young people and understand their needs and desires. We should also build an inclusive environment, it takes time. Do not discourage them. We should also embrace change and be willing to adapt and try new things to better engage youth but without abandoning the true ways in Christ,” said Bhoundi.
She further stressed the need for mentorship programs and inclusion of young people in leadership positions and church departments for better and fair representation and participation.

“Practical strategies for inclusivity include engaging them in departments such as praise and worship, hosting and ushering among others. Also, we should Incorporate contemporary music, multimedia, and interactive elements into our services. Relevant teaching that addresses topics that resonate with the youths such as identity, relationships, social justice, and mental health are necessary.
“I also highly recommend mentorship programs. Pairing youths with older members who can provide guidance and support in various areas is also key, they get to learn how to do things in the house of God. Let us empower young people to plan and lead activities, events, Initiatives and community outreach projects,” she added.
One of the youths who shared his sentiments about youth inclusion and participation in the church revealed that the reason why some of the youths are going back to engage in worldly things is because they are not getting satisfaction in the church.
“To be honest, youths need things that are modern and energetic. We are not saying being formal in church is wrong but I believe it is high time that the church adapts to the change in tastes and lifestyles of youths and begin to introduce youth programs that keep the youths connected and focused in the church. All this should be done in an innovative way that does not compromise God’s principles.
“As for me I suggest the introduction of youth games, parties, youth talk shows and get together sessions which can also be used as safe and good platforms for networking, socializing and teaching especially on issues of relationships, courtship and health related subjects,” said Monica Zuze.
A survey made by ZimGospel Masters magazine revealed that Sunday services in many churches are less attended by the youths as compared to other age groups such as men and women.
