Nourishing Futures in Mwenezi District

On May 13, 2024, a significant meeting took place in Mwenezi district, led by Ms. Maria Tendai Dendere, Director for the Humanitarian Services and Diakonia department at ZCC. The agenda was the district inception and sensitization for a nutrition supplementary feeding project aimed at combating malnutrition among children under five and pregnant and lactating women (PLW) in Wards 6 and 14.

Supported by the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission (Felm), this 4-month project promises a monthly ration of 5kg Corn Soya Blend porridge to improve the nutritional status of the beneficiaries. “Our goal is to address the pressing issue of malnutrition and ensure healthier futures for our children and mothers,” said Ms. Dendere. This initiative is part of ZCC’s ongoing efforts in Mwenezi, Gwanda, and Zvishavane districts to save lives and prevent malnutrition.

Uniting Communities in Manicaland

Just days before, on May 8 and 9, Ms. Dendere and Mr. Tafadzwa Chakuzira, ZCC’s Director for Finance and Organizational Sustainability, facilitated two crucial engagement meetings in Manicaland province. These gatherings were pivotal in sensitizing district stakeholders about two upcoming projects supported by the Global Ministries and United Church of Canada (UCC).

The first project, centered on Sports for Peace, aims to unite host communities and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Runyararo community of Chimanimani district. This initiative uses sports as a vehicle to foster social cohesion and bridge divides, underscoring the ZCC’s belief in the unifying power of sports. The second project addresses the urgent needs of households in Mutasa district, offering Emergency Relief and Recovery Assistance to those who lost their homes and belongings in recent hail storms.

Emergency Nutrition Support in Zvishavane District

On May 15, 2024, the focus shifted to Zvishavane District, where Ms. Dendere and Team Leader Mr. Kuitakwashe Nhongo conducted a district sensitization and inception meeting for another crucial nutrition project. This meeting, attended by 25 district stakeholders including the District Development Coordinator and the Chief Executive Officer for Zvishavane-Runde Rural District Council, detailed the Emergency Nutrition Support project’s objectives.

Supported by Felm, this initiative aims to reduce the risk of malnutrition for children under five and PLW in Wards 7 and 16. “We are dedicated to ensuring that no child or mother suffers from malnutrition in our district,” emphasized Ms. Dendere. This project represents another vital effort by ZCC to improve health outcomes in vulnerable populations.

A Commitment to Community and Collaboration

These initiatives by the Zimbabwe Council of Churches are not just about immediate relief—they are about building resilient communities and fostering long-term wellbeing. By partnering with international organizations and engaging local stakeholders, ZCC is addressing critical issues head-on, from nutrition and health to social unity and disaster recovery.

As the ZCC continues to roll out these projects, the positive impact on Zimbabwe’s most vulnerable communities becomes increasingly evident. Through dedication, collaboration, and a steadfast commitment to humanitarian values, the Zimbabwe Council of Churches is truly making a difference, one project at a time.
