The ecumenical fellowship in Magunje prayed for the Kariba marine disaster for the souls to rest in eternal peace, the bereaved to find comfort in God and for the survivors to overcome the trauma of the worst experience they went through, a prayer held at The Salvation Amy in Magunje, attended by over one hundred and sixty people on 20 August 2026.
“We have gathered today in prayer for the Kariba marine disaster, for the departed we say may their souls rest in peace, those who lost their friends and relatives find comfort in God and the survivors be healed of the traumatic experience they went through.
“There is no better way we can reach out to our friends than placing them in prayer for those going through a traumatic experience of losing friend and relatives and the pain they went through to survive and seeing some friends drowning. As a church, we need to keep praying because 11 August will remain a painful day in history of Zimbabwe and some will struggle to come to term with this loss” said Major Liveson Mushayakarere, Chairperson of Magunje fraternal.
In her words of appreciation, Councilor B. Chipangura appreciated the church for such an initiative as worthwhile at such a difficult time.
“You have done a good thing, to come together in prayer in solidarity with our friends who are mourning their beloved ones. We keep raying that all bodies are recovered to bring closure to such traumatic situation. I would like to thank all churches that have participated in this prayer meeting because it is a noble cause, it is a time we need prayers most,” said Councilor Chipangura.
On 11 August 2026, a boat capsized in Kariba Dam with over 95 people losing their lives and 77 surviving the traumatic experience. The disaster was declared a national disaster.
