The Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta, Bishop of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese, has inaugurated the Holy Door at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Bolgatanga, commencing the Jubilee Year 2025.
This ceremonial event marks a significant Catholic tradition, observed every 25 years, inviting the faithful to undertake pilgrimages to Rome and other designated holy sites.
According to Ghana News Agency, the theme for this year’s Jubilee, ‘pilgrimage of hope,’ will continue until January 6, 2026. During this period, Catholic adherents are encouraged to pass through the Holy Door as a symbol of spiritual renewal, plenary indulgence, and forgiveness of sins.
The Diocese has also identified three destinations for pilgrimage, including the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish, Seven Sorrows Minor Basilica in Navrongo, and the Spiritual Renewal Centre in Kongo.
In the ritual’s opening, Bishop Agyenta invited the faithful to walk through the Holy Door, symbolizing grace and spiritual transformation. Quoting scripture, he stated, “In the scriptures, Jesus said, ‘I am the gate; whoever does not pass through is a thief.'” The bishop emphasized that this act serves as a reminder of Christ as the gateway to eternal life.
Bishop Agyenta highlighted the spiritual significance of the Jubilee Year as a time for renewed hope, patience, and unity. He noted the coincidental blessing of the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish’s centenary celebration aligning with the Jubilee Year 2025.
Drawing from the liturgical readings of the day, he connected the celebration to the Feast of the Holy Family, urging the faithful to embody the virtues of love, trust, and humility demonstrated by Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. “The Holy Family inspires us to nurture stronger family bonds, cultivate mutual respect, and deepen our faith as a diocesan family,” he concluded.
