Hosea 6:6 offers a profound message from God about the essence of true worship: “For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.”
In this verse, God communicates through the prophet Hosea to the people of Israel, underscoring what He truly values in their worship and relationship with Him. It reveals that God prioritises the internal attitudes and behaviours of His people over mere external rituals.

“I desired mercy, and not sacrifice,” states God, indicating His preference for acts of compassion, kindness, and justice over ritualistic offerings. While sacrifices were a central part of the Israelites’ religious practices, God emphasises that these rituals are meaningless without a heart of mercy. He values how we treat others more than the formalities of religious observance. Mercy reflects God’s own character, embodying love, forgiveness, and compassion.
“And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings,” continues the verse, pointing to the importance of an intimate relationship with God. Knowing God involves more than intellectual understanding; it entails a deep, personal relationship marked by love, reverence, and obedience. God desires that His people seek to understand and align with His will and character, which goes beyond performing religious duties.
As we reflect on this verse, it invites us to examine the sincerity of our own worship. Are we merely going through the motions of religious practices, or are we cultivating a heart of mercy and a genuine relationship with God? It challenges us to prioritise compassion and seek a deeper understanding of who God is and what He desires from us.
