Some of the church leaders who expressed their sentiments revealed that all these youth meetings have been useful to create a free platform for the youths to engage in meaningful conversations about personal development, networking and sharing knowledge on how to overcome the world amid worrisome instances of young people’s involvement in crime, drugs and immorality.
The Word of Redemption Churches Founder Pastor Bright encouraged all youth Pastors to have more youth programmes in the church so that young people can feel included and considered.
“I have seen the importance of having regular youth programmes such as braai and fellowships. These sessions offer youths a chance to freely express themselves, their issues and views without any fear of being judged or condemned.
“Youth engagement sessions also help to reach even those who have not yet received Christ. I have tried my best by God’s grace to teach youths in the church to see everything in a spiritual way and not to be put under pressure by others. I also teach them to depend on prayer and the word of God, anything outside the word destroys no matter how beautiful it may look so we go to the mountain for prayer every Friday with the youth for night prayers and teachings,” said Ndhlovu.
The Catholic Diocese of Gweru has also stepped up efforts in addressing social ills through engaging social advisors and youth animators, health experts and law enforcers towards raising awareness in the city about the drawbacks of substance abuse in young people’s lives.
Gweru Diocesan Youth Representative in the DPC Executive Chimuka Larry Kuda further revealed that they have been using social media for their awareness campaigns.
“As a Diocese we are always active to make sure that young people get useful knowledge which will help their lives. We teach them to fear God and not to be engaged in fornication as it will lead to the spread of STIs and HIV/AIDS.
“During youth congresses we invite health specialists, the police and other professionals so that young people can be educated on areas which include health and well-being and career guidance among others.
“The Diocese of Gweru has declared this whole year as the year of young people which means that every programme which will be hosted will prioritise the youth,” he said
