The Salvation Army Church has partnered with the government to provide breakfast at Parirenyatwa Hospital, a program that commenced on October 1 2024 aims to support patients and their families who often go without food while at the hospital.
Major Tapera Foroma, the Territorial Public Relations Secretary of the Salvation Army, told Zimgospel Masters the church’s commitment of stretching hand to those who are in needy.
“The Salvation Army has a motto that says, ‘Where there is need, there is The Salvation Army’ or ‘Hand to man and heart to God.”
He mentioned the pressing need for this initiative noting that many people sleep at the hospital or arrive early spending the entire day without food and this year the situation has been exacerbated by the El Niño-induced drought, making it increasingly difficult for families to make ends meet.
The Major assured the public of the sustainability of the initiative, pointing to the church’s League of Mercy, which provides foodstuffs for the needy throughout the year.
“Sustainability is in that we have our League of Mercy Department from within the church who annually contribute foodstuffs for the needy, including old people’s homes.”
The decision to extend support to the out-patient department and dialysis patients came from the church’s leadership and there are plans to consider the Sally Mugabe Hospital’s pediatric department, where mothers accompanying sick children require similar support.
Discussions with the hospital administration are ongoing, with the program set to resume once bread sponsorship is secured from potential partners. Bakers Inn has already stepped up to assist in making this plan a reality.
“Our relationship with the government is strong, and we strive to complement their efforts, particularly in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
Salvation Army has also begun distributing food handouts in various communities to aid the government in its efforts to feed the nation and they are teaching sustainable farming practices through the Pfumvudza program in numerous communities.
Currently, the Salvation Army is providing tea on Tuesdays at Parirenyatwa Hospital, with hopes of acquiring more resources to expand the program’s frequency.
One of the beneficiaries, Rutendo Muodza Mazhinya, expressed gratitude for the initiative emphasized her major concern to those who travel long distance coming to seek help at the hospital.
“This is a good initiative; people are benefiting as some travel long distances without food or taking in anything. Much credit goes to the Salvation Army leadership and its partners.”
Madiba Sibineji, a leader at Johane Masowe Echishanu Marimba branch, highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and organizations like the church.
“Government sometimes needs help from individuals who are capable, especially the church or private players.”
The Salvation Army is an international church whose social arm is very strong, In Zimbabwe, The Salvation Army has various social homes that include Bumhudzo Hospital Home, Braeside Social Home and Ralstein Home.
