In a significant milestone for infant healthcare in Sierra Leone, 21 nurses have recently been certified in neonatal nursing, thanks to the collaborative efforts of UNICEF and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
These trained nurses will be stationed at Special Care Baby Units in key cities across the country, including Freetown, Bo, Kenema, and Makeni, where they will play a crucial role in providing lifesaving care to newborns.

The certification ceremony, attended by representatives from UNICEF, FCDO, and other stakeholders, marked the culmination of an intensive training program aimed at equipping nurses with the specialized skills required to address the unique needs of newborns.
Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical training, participants gained expertise in neonatal care, including resuscitation techniques, infection prevention, and breastfeeding support.
The newly certified nurses are poised to make a tangible difference in improving neonatal health outcomes in Sierra Leone, where access to quality healthcare for newborns remains a pressing concern.
By deploying skilled professionals to Special Care Baby Units, UNICEF and FCDO aim to reduce neonatal mortality rates and ensure that every child has access to the care they need to thrive.
Furthermore, efforts to bolster neonatal nursing capacity in Sierra Leone are ongoing, with the training of an additional 26 nurses already underway.
Selected from districts across the country, these nurses represent the next cohort of frontline healthcare providers who will join the fight against infant mortality and contribute to building a healthier future for Sierra Leone’s children.
