One of the highlights of the visit was witnessing a cooking demonstration conducted by the nutrition care group, showcasing the preparation of nutritious meals using locally grown foods such as usika, kapenta, and umkhomo (tamarind, tiny fish, and baobab powder).
This demonstration highlighted the importance of utilizing locally available resources to promote food security and improve nutrition in the community.
Expressing the commitment of the United States to the people of Zimbabwe, Mr. Gauthier emphasized the partnership between USAID, Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture (CNFA), and local partners under the Amalima Loko program.
He underscored the program’s objective of building resilience and enhancing food and nutrition security among vulnerable communities across Zimbabwe.
Through the Amalima Loko initiative, efforts are underway to improve food and nutrition access for over 82,000 vulnerable households.
This is achieved through various interventions, including the construction of small dams, weirs, dip tanks, community gardens, and sanitation infrastructure in rural communal wards of Tsholotsho, Nkayi, Lupane, Binga, and Hwange districts of Matabeleland North Province.
The visit by USAID Deputy Mission Director Ramses Gauthier reaffirmed the commitment of the United States to supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing food security and nutrition in Zimbabwe, particularly in rural communities where assistance is most needed.
