In a groundbreaking initiative, Vana Vedu Organization, through its junior football club, an affiliate of the Chitungwiza Junior Football Development League and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), has undertaken a dual mission of empowering youths and combating drug and substance abuse.

The organization, known for its commitment to help underprivileged young people, has integrated sports activities into its mandate, scheduling regular events every Saturday.

The Executive Director of Vana Vedu, Chipo Mahamba, expressed the organization’s dedication to identifying and nurturing local talent through sports, in an effort to combat the pervasive issue of substance abuse among the youth.

“Besides our humanitarian works, we have joined forces with the Chitungwiza Junior Football Development League, an affiliate of ZIFA, to harness the potential of our young footballers and address the challenge of drug and substance abuse,” stated Mahamba during a sports competition at Stoneridge Park last Saturday.

The junior football club, catering to age groups 11, 13, 15, and 17, boasts a total of 92 players who actively participate in the scheduled Saturday events, as directed by the Chitungwiza Junior Football Development League.

Mahamba emphasized the critical role of these activities in keeping the youth engaged and away from detrimental behaviors within their community, aligning with the organization’s motto, “Kubara Kwasahwira kubara kwakowo.”

This collaboration between Vana Vedu Organization and Chitungwiza football development league marks a significant step in not only developing sporting talent but also in creating a safe and supportive environment for the youth to thrive.

Through the power of sports, these organizations are championing economic empowerment and actively combating the scourge of substance abuse, exemplifying a holistic approach to nurturing the next generation.

Clinton Ndhlovu, under-17 boys’ captain, said: “When we were younger, we used to think that football was just for entertainment before realizing that some people are making a living from it.

“This initiative has taught us to showcase our talent whenever we participate. You never know what tomorrow holds. Through this, I am living a drug-free life and hoping to become a top footballer in the near future, thanks to the mentorship and training we are receiving from the organization.”

While Nigel M. Rabvunda, under 11, said: “This mentorship helps me develop a habit of socializing, which I didn’t have before. I wish to play for Dynamos and Liverpool.”

By leveraging the universal appeal of football and the values it instills, Vana Vedu Organization and its partners are sowing the seeds of positive change, inspiring hope, and offering a pathway to a brighter future for the youth in Zimbabwe.

With their unwavering commitment, they are paving the way for a generation of empowered, resilient, and drug-free young individuals.
