In the heart of Chiredzi, a remarkable story of love, acceptance, and community unfolded as friends, relatives, and Roman Catholic Church members gathered to celebrate the 53rd birthday of a very special individual, Noel Joachim Machanja, on July 13, 2024.

Machanja, who is mentally challenged, born on 8 June 1971 had never experienced a birthday celebration before, but this year, the community came together to change that.

The joyous occasion began with a heartfelt church service at Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, where Reverend Father Wilbrode Godzongi delivered a poignant sermon. Father Godzongi emphasized the importance of inclusivity and celebrating Machanja’s life, highlighting the significance of giving him a sense of belonging.

“Celebrating Machanja’s birthday and all the preparations we did for him shows that we are giving him a sense of belonging. That spirit should always be within us Christians so that we are able to have a sense of belong in our lives,” he said.

The Reverend noted that Machanja’s availability to the congregation was a testament to his dedication and willingness to serve, despite facing challenges. After the service, the celebration continued at Enklen Dam in Chiredzi, where the community had prepared a vibrant party.

Doreen Madzingo, one of the organizers and a close friend of Machanja’s, shared how he had approached her in May, humbly requesting a birthday celebration. Touched by his simplicity and kindness, Madzingo rallied the community to make his dream a reality.

“Machanja came to me in May asking me to organise a birthday celebration for him. I was touched by his simplicity and kindness and knew it had to happen,” said Madzingo.

Machanja’s contribution to the community made people want to come together and celebrate him.

“Machanja’s presence at funerals, singing and playing the drum and hosho, has touched many hearts. We wanted to show our appreciation for all that he does, and we hope that this birthday celebration will be a special memory for him,” she said.

The community’s response was overwhelming, with individuals from all walks of life contributing to the celebration. Businessmen, politicians, and church members came together, providing food, decorations, and gifts. Machanja’s birthday party became a symbol of unity and compassion, reflecting the true spirit of Christianity.

The gifts, including cement, tiles, door frames, doors, and money, were given with the hope of building Machanja a house, a testament to the community’s commitment to supporting him. Machanja’s birthday celebration was a powerful reminder that everyone deserves to feel loved, accepted, and valued.

The Chiredzi community’s selfless act of kindness demonstrated that even small gestures can have a profound impact on someone’s life. Machanja’s birthday celebration will be remembered for years to come, a shining example of the power of community, love, and acceptance.
