MANINGI Queens Soccer club’s dream of establishing centres around the country’s high density suburbs is currently underway as they targeting to open up a new branch in Norton.
Maningi Queens are part of Maningi’s Youth Soccer Academy headed by Coach Ray Moyo and Primrose Serima.
The club, which was promoted into the Premier Soccer League this season, is set to move to Norton to become the first team from the small farming town to star in the topflight league.
The team will be setting up the first girls High Performance Centre in Norton where girls as young as six will be given a chance to develop into world class players in a few years.
Club director Gladman Dimbiri, who is based in the United Kingdom, told ZimGospel Masters that their aim was to divert young girls away from the streets and to protect them from activities that could lead them into a life of crime and debauchery.
“The aim of Maningi Youth Soccer Academy is to divert children from the streets and find them something enjoyable to do, this will help to protect them from activities that will lead them to crime and disorder,” he said.
The project, according to Dimbiri, was also going to be used to spread awareness about HIV and AIDS particularly among young people.
“This project will also focus on educating the youth around issues such as good citizenship and help to spread awareness about HIV and AIDS,” he said.
“We decided to use football to tackle these issues in a way that will make young people enjoy whilst developing them as soccer players who will have a successful footballing career.”
Dimbiri said they had an ambitious plan to spread the project to as many suburbs as possible across the country. “We are working towards bringing many townships and suburbs around Zimbabwe,” he said. The academy was formed in 2007, in Zaka.
