Good morning everyone, it is an honor to be here with you today. Our scripture for today is from Genesis 4:9 which says “Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Today, we are focusing on the idea of being each other’s keeper. In this scripture, Cain is being asked by God to take responsibility for his brother Abel’s whereabouts. This story gives us insight into the importance of looking out for one another.
Think about it, if Cain had been obedient to God, he would have known where Abel was at all times and would have been able to protect him from harm. This story shows us that we have an obligation to look after each other.
We see this same idea throughout the Bible.
Jesus says in Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Jesus is telling us that when we come together in his name, he will be with us.
This means that we should look to protect one another in our communities, since we are together in Jesus’ name. We also see this idea in the story of the Good Samaritan. In this story, a man is beat up and left for dead on the side of the road.
Two people pass by and ignore him, but then a Good Samaritan stops and helps him. He takes care of the man’s wounds and then pays for him to stay in a nearby inn. By being a Good Samaritan and looking out for someone else in need, he truly was acting as his brother’s keeper.
Finally, we can take this idea and apply it to our own lives. As Christians, we should look out for each other and be willing to help those in need. We should strive to be like the Good Samaritan and be willing to go out of our way to help someone else.
We should also remember that as believers, we are all part of the same body of Christ, so it is our duty to look out for each other. In conclusion, let us remember the importance of being each other’s keeper.
Let us strive to be like the Good Samaritan and take care of those in need. Let us also remember that as Christians, we are all part of the same body and should therefore look out for one another in our communities.
