ST. UGANDA Martyrs from Mufakose were last month crowned champions at the Kuzvipirira Kwevechidiki Set Piece Choir Competitions hosted by the Roman Catholic Church’s South West of City Denary Youth and Vocations at St Mary’s Queen of Peace Old Highfield church.
The competition was designed to spread the message on the importance of alleviating substance and drug abuse to sustain the future of the church. The competitions started soon after Mass, which was presided over by Youth and Vocations Spiritual director, Father Tigere and Father F Ruwona.
The Budiriro parish came second, followed by Glen Norah, Trinity, Glen View, Old Highfield, New Highfield, All Saints and St. Peters Kubatana. Young people from all South West and other locations in Harare thronged the Highfields Parish to witness the choir competitions which ran under the theme, Kuzvipira Kwevechidiki Ndiyo Tarisiro Ramangwana.
The Catholic country co-ordinator against drug and human trafficking, Sister Diana, urged the youth to desist from substance abuse and such other harmful practice.
“As the church, we are against drug abuse and the smuggling in of drugs by parents and drug peddlers in communities. It’s destroying the future of country and church,” she said.
“The availability of drugs in communities has become widespread, even sold among n church goers is becoming a norm which is bad, unacceptable and unexpected from church goers except on strictly therapeutic grounds. Tobacco and alcohol may be seen as pleasure drugs inflicts very grave damage to youth and life.”
